During WW1, Secretary Josephus Daniels banned alcohol in the Navy, making coffee the strongest drink available. This led to the nickname "cup of joe" for coffee.

The phrase has been in use since World War I, originally by sailors in the American Navy. Stewards increased their purchases of coffee, as this was the strongest drink allowed among other beverages banned by the Secretary Josephus Daniels. A cup of coffee became known as a “Cup of Joe”.
Three brothers decided to take their love and passion for coffee into the world of business, and decided to start their own café Cup of Joe based in Doha, Qatar.
